Arizona Senate Democrats Condemn President Trump's Latest Executive Orders Targeting Immigrant Families

PHOENIX - Arizona Senate Democrats are condemning the two executive orders signed by President Donald Trump targeting birthright citizenship and so-called "birth tourism," calling the actions another example of an administration willing to test constitutional limits while using immigrant communities as political targets. The orders come just weeks after the U.S. Supreme Court reaffirmed that the Constitution protects birthright citizenship for nearly all children born on U.S. soil.

Assistant Democratic Leader Sen. Catherine Miranda, Ranking Member of the Senate Border Security Committee, released the following statement:

"The actions taken by President Trump once again demonstrate that this administration is willing to push the limits of executive power when things don't go its way. After the Supreme Court reaffirmed that birthright citizenship is protected under the Constitution, the President has chosen to pursue yet another attempt to undermine those protections and target immigrant families instead of respecting the rule of law.

Even if these executive orders do not affect every immigrant family, they send a dangerous message. They embolden discrimination, deepen fear in our communities, and contribute to an environment where families feel less safe simply because of where they come from. We have already witnessed the consequences of this immigration crackdown here in Arizona and across the country. Immigrants and citizens have died under custody of immigration law enforcement.

Enough is enough. Arizona Senate Democrats stand with our immigrant communities and will continue fighting for comprehensive immigration reform that protects human rights, respects the Constitution, and treats every person with the dignity and respect they deserve. This abuse of executive power must end, and this administration must be held accountable."
